Course Description

Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is an emerging therapy in treatment of benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH). About 50% of men aged 60-70 and up to 90% of men aged 70-89 years will have clinical symptoms associated with BPH. These symptoms are manifested by lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which may include: frequency, incontinence, dribbling, urinary retention, nocturia and urinary tract infections. Medical therapy has been the primary line of treatment for BPH. However, up to 10% of men will need surgical interventions despite optimal medical therapy. The purpose of this presentation is to provide nursing insight in preoperative, intraprocedure, and postprocedure care, which will be highlighted in a patient case study discussion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify at least 3 indications and 3 contraindications for PAE procedure.
  • Identify 3 at least potential complications of PAE.
  • Identify at least 3 key nursing assessment and care during perioperative and postoperative for patients undergoing PAE procedure.
