Course Description

As image-guided therapeutic and diagnostic procedures have increased in demand, specific risk factors for peri-procedural complications have remained poorly defined.  Identification of patients at increased risk of bleeding allows radiologists and registered nurses to collaborate for patient safety and to improve patient outcomes. This presentation discusses a project designed to identify risk factors for bleeding related to interventional radiology procedures.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine the mechanism of action and associated lab values of common anticoagulants encountered in interventional radiology practice.
  • Analyze anticoagulants and understand why they may or may not be held prior to interventional radiology procedures.
  • Analyze and apply recommended procedural guidelines to assess patients for risk factors prior to interventional radiology procedures.
