Thermal Ablation

This module examines the types of thermal ablation therapies available. A discussion of the types of thermal therapies along with a review of each type of ablation and the areas of Imaging involved. Preoperative as well as  postoperative considerations are presented, which can also be used for patient teaching.

Learning Objectives

  • Define thermal therapy.
  • List two advantages of thermal therapy.
  • Describe two post-ablation effects that may
    occur.

TIPS Procedures

This module discusses why a TIPS procedure may be helpful for a patient suffering from portal hypertension. Benefits and complications of the procedure are outlined. Excellent visuals could be useful for patient teaching, and preoperative preparation and postop care are given, along with a  plan for patient follow-up.

  • Describe the pre-procedure considerations.
  • Be able to tell the patient what to expect.
