Course Description

Vascular Procedures

This module identifies considerations for vascular imaging. Patient monitoring, stenting, embolization, thrombolysis are discussed, with an emphasis on patient teaching. Preoperative assessment and preparation are highlighted along with a demonstration of an Allen’s test. Postop complications are mentioned as well as closure devices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define venous and arterial angiography.
  • Discuss patient preparation for vascular
    angiography.
  • Describe how to perform an Allen’s test.
  • Identify the steps in stenting a vessel.
  • State the indications and contraindications for
    thrombolysis.

Cardiac Invasive

This module reviews the anatomy, indications and complications of cardiac catheterization. Various access sites are discussed, as well as postop monitoring. Additional invasive cardiac procedures are reviewed.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify cardiac anatomy.
  • Discuss indications for cardiac catheterization.
  • List four contraindications for cardiac catheterization.
  • Differentiate a right heart cath from a left heart cath.
  • List three major complications of a cardiac catheterization.

Cardiac Non-Invasive

Aside from cardiac catheterization, many cardiac non-invasive exams are performed in different areas of the Imaging Department. The exams done in nuclear medicine, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and other areas are discussed, as well as the indications and patient preparation.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe 3 different types of stress testing and
    their preparation.
  • Discuss two cardiac CT exams and the reason
    for each.
  • Indicate the rationale for a pericardiocentesis.
